GAME VIEWING, BIRDING Caledon Nature Reserve covers 2 300 ha and surrounds the Welbedacht Dam on the Caledon River. The vegetation is mostly mixed grassland, with karee thorn, wild olive and white stinkwood growing in ravines and on rocky ridges. Mountain reedbuck and steenbok occur naturally in the area and black wildebeest, blesbok and springbok have been introduced. Many waterbirds are attracted to the dam - the black stork breeds here - with almost 200 species of birds recorded. Location: Southern part of Free State; south-west of Wepener. Access: From Wepener follow the R26/R702 towards Bloemfontein for about 7 km, then turn left onto the graded gravel R701 in the direction of Smithfield; the reserve lies on the Welbedacht Dam to the left of the road. Accommodation: Two floating 'bush camps', one of which can only be reached using a 4x4 vehicle; each camp can accommodate up to 16 people and must be hired as a unit. Each has ablution facilities and lapa. Other facilities: Hiking permitted; fishing (with permit); canoeing. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: Sunrise to sunset.
